Brand new 2019 Buick TourX Preferred. Wife really wants a white Essence, and this is Rioja Red Preferred.
We test drove it last week, and we both vastly preferred it to the new Outback XT Onyx edition.
They also have 0% for 72 moths, but then the discounts are way less and it makes more sense to pay 5% interest. We have 800+ credit scores so we should qualify for the lowest offer, but they won’t go low after $8000 in rebates - typical GM Financial stuff. Dealer called us today to offer us this, which is $2000 lower than what we had last week as the best offer.
But, we have a 2000 Toyota Tundra with 140k miles which is uber reliable and is our dog-mobile , and we’re getting a free 2007 Honda Fit with 40k miles (uber base, zero options, crank windows base levels) so we can be payment free for a while, for as long as we want, but with two old cars.
We also have two WRX leases which we have to return on 5/1, and those will cost us around $1500 to return (I presume, $500 each or so for disposition fee, and I have 3 hail damage dings). If we trade them in, our payoff is around $19k which should be pretty much what they are worth - we might make a few bucks or break even, but we won’t have to pay out of pocket.
What the hell am I supposed to do here? The car is an amazing deal, and we loved it. But, it is not 100% what we’d like trim or color-wise (this is the only TourX in Denver area, closest Essence we like is in Kansas City and it doesn’t have the same discounts), our monthly out of pocket for payments and insurance would go from around $370 to $500-600 depending on how long of a term we select. Affording it is not really a problem, but we just bought a new and pricey house, and we like the idea of throwing all the extra cash at it so we can pay it off in 7-8 years, instead of 15 years which is our current loan. Smart money says drive the paid off vehicles. But, I love the idea of a new wagon with a turbo engine and Apple car play. Decisions, decisions...

We test drove it last week, and we both vastly preferred it to the new Outback XT Onyx edition.
Why do you like it better than the Outback XT?
This is a good deal no doubt and Tours have been selling regularly with 6-10K discounts but those resale values also drop like a rock so you’ re gonna take a big hit.

I keep trying to see if my wife would want one of these. Im getting tired of the REALLY crapy range of the GX. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the GX, but something that can go more than 220 mile to E in the winter would be nice. Thats what you get when you put a gas V8 in a vehicle with a tank designed for a diesel 4 cy lind er.

It just felt better. 8sp auto vs CVT, power delivery, lack of noise, and interior packaging - the piece of dash on the Outback to the left and down of the steering wheel feels like it’s in the way. Also, as cool as the huge screen is in the Outback, I prefer tactile feedback in my cars. At least the Outback has a knob for volume, but I hate so many options to be buried in the menu.
Also, new Outback has mandatory EyeSight, and you have to turn if off in the menu after every start which sucks balls. This particular Buick doesn’t have any self driving or self correcting features which is how it should be.
Resale value is a concern, for sure.

If they gave me 0% for 72 and the discount , I’d be there signing the deal now. As it is, if we do 5% for 72 months, the car would cost me just over $30k (some $4500 in interest) and would be worth maybe $10k in 6 years.
It is an awesome car. It feels way better than any car selling for $23000 should. And, coming from two WRXs, it is so much more quiet as well.

By it with all the discounts, then refi. That’s what I did both with the 4Runner and Focus ST....better discounts when I went with either the in house or manufacturer crazy rates, then refinanced lower with USAA. The FoST was something crazy, like $4k in rebates, but had to finance at 6%. I refinanced before I made the first payment.
Now go buy that TourX before I buy it first.

With those credit scores, check some credit unions. Mine are all 3-3.5% for up to 75 months right now (anything 2011 or newer! That’s a broad definition of “new”)
I sort of wrote the Buick off after all the 2019 models disappeared here, but this is solid. But I also want the Essence...that’s still the smart money, especially if you can get a comparable discount.

Sounds like you don’t need the new car right now. Having no car payments is a very nice place to be. Especially with new house expenses. It’s only a short term issue. And think of how much better off you’ll be if you can put a big dent in your mortgage.

They offer a base white for free, and a really nice white for $600 or so. We’d be fine with white or gray, maybe silver or black. Not really a huge fan of the brighter color options. Rioja red looks awesome with my polarized oakleys but it is not very exciting on its own.

I normally say go the new car route but with two reliable paid off cars and this not being the combo you want..I’d say wait. Save up the cash or use it towards the house and maybe pick up a slightly used on in a year or two. You know they will depreciate like rocks given they can’t even sell them with a 10k discount.

I don’t think I can refi for much less than 5%. I’ve seen one offer for 3.8%, and that would save under $1000 over 6 years.
Ironically, we did that when we bought the house. We had to finance with the builders to get all the discounts, and they had sucky offers for a 15 year loan. We closed on the 24th with the lowest closing cost and worst rate , started the refi on the 25th.

At this point, they are close to that. There is a dealership in FLorida with a new 2018 left in stock and they lost manufacturers assistance. They now sell 2019s for less than they can sell that 2018, so they are stuck.
2020s are coming out, so these guys want to sell the last year model badly.

I’m sorry but there is no way in hell that I would go anywhere near finance for one of these things. If you end up paying 30 grand over five years for one then you have rocks in your head.
I know it’s a good car but it is an unloved orphan that is very very soon to be quietly shot. It s manufacturer doesn’t want it, its retailer doesn’t want it and most customers don’t want it...Holden has already given up on it. In five years there will almost certainly be no support for them at all.
Unless you have the cash AND a screaming deal... don't.

I’m gonna be the bad influence here and say get the wagon! It’s a great deal on a nice car. I also happen to think they look great in red.
If you buy it, t ake all the rebates and use their financing. If you like the dealer, make 3 or 4 payments so they get their cut for selling the loan, and then refinance. I’m not sure if other banks do this, but m y credit union offers “new”, “late model” and “used” loans where the “ late model” covers cars within 2 model years of current and under 30k miles. We refinanced the Terrain after about 6 months and knocked the interest from 5% to 3.5%.

Dealer transfer for the wagon? At least in the southeast, dealer transfers are how people get anything basically.
I’m of the philosophy that if the finances are good, make some people interested in a truck or a cheap car happy. If the Fit is free, especially, tout is as a fantastic first car and sell it for a few grand. That’ll help out with buying the wagon.

The only reason they are offering either the massive discount or the zero interest is because they are trying to dump them.
I’m guessing in five years time there won’t be available parts for these things outside of basic filters and most Buick parts counter staff will say “T ourX?” in the sort of tone that says they haven’t a clue what you are talking about.
Add to all that the fact they depreciate like a shot duck (certainly do here in Oz and by all accounts seem to there too) even with the tiny sales volume...and they seem like the perfect way to burn money you clearly don’t have. Cars are a bad investment at the best of times but this is really asking for underwater issues.
If it were me and a poor financial decision were to be made then I’d seriously consider an Alfa Romeo Giulia instead...

Dude, I can buy this car in cash any time I want. Having the money is not an issue, it’s deciding if I want to spent even more of it on my 15 year loan on our second house or should I just keep putting only $1000 extra per month on the principal and invest some in a new car when I already have two other, paid off cars.
As for parts, they have the 2020 models out already. I’m sure the car will be canceled sooner than later, being an Opel at the time GM doesn’t own Opel any longer. We basically want to drive one new or newish car with modern features for about 8 years which is the goal to pay off the house, and then we’ll take our rental house income and buy my wife the Macan she wants. I think parts should be around for that long because 2020 models will probably sell well into 2021, maybe even 2022. I think the federal law calls for 7 years of producing parts after a vehicle is discontinued. But, I never had an orphaned car for long enough to know.
So, in short, you clearly presume too much.

I know nothing about buying new cars these days since I haven't bought a new one since 2002. In fact I haven't bought any cars since 2002. Regardless, I would never finance a new car. And if I did have any sort of loan on anything then I'd be pushing to pay that off first rather than spending coin on a depreciating asset. No matter how financially secure you seem to be...
